Isshinryu Karate
Isshinryu is a style of Okinawan karate formed by a synthesis of
Shorin-ryu karate and Goju-ryu karate. The style was founded by master
Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1956. The name means, literally, "one heart, one
mind way. I believe that this comes from the oriental idea that if your
mind and heart are unified you can accomplish anything. This is an
extremely effective style that has been refined to eliminate flashy
unnecessary techniques. This leaves only the most effective techniques.
This art does not use uncomfortably low stances or difficult acrobatics.
Because of this it is not necessary to be an expert athlete to attain
proficiency in this style. It will with practice develop strength, endurance,
balance and high self esteem. Students will learn to defend themselves
against unarmed and armed assailants. Rank will be awarded based on
Forms, fighting ability and understanding of the Martial way. Advanced
students will study weapons such as the staff, Sai and tonfa.
